Why do people think that a high population growth rate is good for the economy?

How can poverty, lack of resources, overcrowding and unemployment be good for the economy?

How can having too many open jobs and not enough people to fill them be good for the economy. Their is a fine line, that is why in the US illegals are able to find so much work, because we have a work force shortage. If we didn%26#039;t have a shortage illegals wouldn%26#039;t be able to find under the counter work as easily.

It depends entirely on the area.

If it is an area with plenty of resources, then the labor is helpful. If the resources are short, as you are implying, then it isn%26#039;t.

Each situation is different.|||Because a high population growth CREATES employment ! More consumers = more spending, more building of schools, houses, etc. ! The trick is to ensure they get good education and become productive members of society.|||In the situation where you have more work than people to do it, Yes. But in an overcrowded situation it would only cause the problems to become worse.|||One reason is because retired people cost money and don%26#039;t usually make money. So it%26#039;s best to have more young hardworking tax paying paying people to pay for the care/pensions of the retired.

Also certain areas may be lacking in skilled staff and the easiest and quickest way to combat this is to allow skilled immigrants to cover these gaps. A shortage of skilled labour in one industry can effect the productivity and output of many industries.

It is also an issue pushed by then UN. Nations are looked upon kindly if they accept more immigrants especially from impoverished areas. I%26#039;d have to agree with you though keep immigration to a bare minimum nothing to do with race or religion just space and resources.|||This is a most interesting question. I think it all goes back to the %26quot;tricky math%26quot; that was so popular in previous election campaigns.

It seems that if the numbers are generated into a computer in a manner to have them meet a predetermined goal; then the results will most naturally come out the way they were meant to.

It always gives me a case of the sad giggles when in late October we are told that the joblessness rate has gone down and more people are working than have been in the past several months. Again, more sad giggles when I hear people cheering about this news. Of course there are more jobs - the college students and high school students are now working for the upcoming holidays. There is never a huge announcement at the end of January or beginning of February that the jobless rate has fallen to an all time low because the malls and fast food restaurants have lost all of the student workers.

I see by some of the other responses where %26quot;illegals%26quot; (that word is very disturbing to me as it takes away the humanity of the people; but that is an entirely different subject) are mentioned. If, indeed high population growth rate was good for the economy, why are the borders being guarded with such ferocity? It would seem by this logic, the more the more plentiful.

I have no answers, just more questions. and confusion. ~D
