Why are 'famous' people throwing their $$ to poverty in other countries? Shouldn't ch

It seems to me that hollywoods elite keep focusing on poverty in other countries, and ignore the fact that more and more people right here in the US are poverty stricken and need help!! Maybe I am wrong, but I think they need to start with the problems in this country, before giving all their monies to other countries. The unemployment rates are astronomical, people don%26#039;t have health insurance; and all I keep hearing is %26quot;Help the children in Africa%26quot;. What about the American children who%26#039;s parents can%26#039;t put food on the table and can%26#039;t afford medicine for their kids?? Am I mistaken?? Please respond......

Why are %26#039;famous%26#039; people throwing their $$ to poverty in other countries? Shouldn%26#039;t charity begin at home???small business loans

Well, the poor in this country won’t generate the same kind of publicity as it would in countries overseas. After all those people don’t even speak the same language as we do, so the media can say that they’re so impoverished that can’t even afford an education. They can interview them and have their “translators” interpret them as saying whatever they want. And what do the Hollywood types get if they help these people aside from world media attention and a few ‘atta boy’s’ from the political leaders of whoever’s country they happen to be in, a population of Senegalese people who learn enough English to they can say “thank you Alec Baldwin, because of you I can afford to go to school and write to you. You are my hero.” And you know the American press will be there.

The poor in this country are only going to say “About time! We’ve been saying that you should help us her first since you people put a man on the moon!” (Rich Hollywood types don’t like to be reminded that they’re ignorant too because they depend on the media for their information) just as long as Bono looks good in Kenya.

I agree totally! Couldn%26#039;t have said it better myself!|||It%26#039;s sad that your government doesn%26#039;t put more money in that, but instead puts a lot of money in the war industry.

The whole world would be a better place if they would start to take care for the people in your country first.|||I always ask myself that but I guess you get more press when you go overseas. Celebrities get tons of attention when they help other countries.|||i%26#039;m right there with you on this one.|||You%26#039;re not mistaken, they feel it%26#039;s more dramatic to take it out of the country. I wonder if other countries movies stars would come here to focus on US poverty.

I feel these crazy salaries put the rest of the population in a poor position because their willingness to over pay for property makes apartment as and housing in LA out of reach for normal people. Obviously if you own more Than one property and you can%26#039;t live in all of them i the same time you are taking away housing opportunities away form other people.

They certainly are proving their housing to the less fortunate let alone the POOR.

Is it at all generous if it%26#039;s all a tax write off. It%26#039;s a tax wirte off in or outside the country!

Our government gives at lot of aid to other countries as well.|||First of all, unemployment in the US is actually very low. Also, where does disease come from? Poor countries. If people want to use their money to stamp out disease in the rest of the world, that helps to keep disease from spreading here. Bill Gates has a plan to rid the world of the top 20 infectious diseases like AIDS, malaria, smallpox (we already beat smallpox once, and it%26#039;s coming back, darn it!), etc. Let%26#039;s give him a chance.|||you are mistaken!

I am a big fan of property rights, I don%26#039;t care if they give money to Ugandans or by pools to swim in, it is their money.

But as Philanthropy goes their are allot of good causes all over the world and when you give over seas in 3rd world countries your dollar does a lot more good. instead of providing one meal in the USA that same amount of money can provide a month of meals over seas (not the same standard of meals but the standard that they are used to)

Having been to 3rd world countries I will tell you that their are no poor people in the United States we only have people who are living above their means.|||Because they%26#039;re more poor, and a dollar over there does more good than a dollar over here, and because investing there stops problems that eventually migrate here.

I agree with you though. A certain amount should be invested overseas, but where is that money within our country? I grew up pretty poor, wish I%26#039;d had a little help then.|||for two reasons that you will discover while this discussion develops:

1.) the impact obtained by one US $ is greater if invested 3rd world countries; namely, the %26quot;multiplier%26quot; is greater. Of courser we are not talking about consumption but well being.

2.) Relativity of poverty. Are the %26quot;poor%26quot; people from switzerland just like those in the US? what about the poor people from US compared to those in Haiti?
